LISTEN TO: Dinosaur Jr., “Watch the Corners”
Everyone agrees this sounds ridiculously good, right? There’s not a whole lot to add after that: J Mascis’s vocals are, as always, phenomenal. The transition from blistering electric into acoustic and back into the electric is spine-tingling. The band just knows how to play together that almost reaches out of the stereo to physically be a presence with the listener. There isn’t a lot that sounds like this out there right now.

Their new album, I Bet On Sky, is scheduled for a September 18 release– it will be their third release since the original trio reformed in 2005. As J Mascis said to Rolling Stone, part of the reason this record sounds different is: “I guess on this record, I wasn’t as worried if we could play the songs live… [On] the other two records [2007's Beyond and 2009's Farm], I was thinking of it being more songs that we could play live and tour more. I guess that’s what’s kind of different about this album: I just did what I felt would sound good.” If the rest of the record is anywhere near this good, they succeeded.
